More About Grenå

Grenaa is part of the largest of the five Danish regions – covering 13,000 square kilometres.

There are landscapes and cultural sights to suit every taste all the year round. The region also has a thriving business community with specific strengths within sustainable energy production, processing of foodstuffs, information technology and advanced manufacturing industry.

The region is well served by a digital and physical infrastructure that covers highways as well as two international airports and Denmark’s largest container harbour.

The region stretches from coast to coast across Central Jutland Peninsula. It offers a wide range of experiences. From the untamed North Sea in the West with endless kilometres of sandy beaches for nature lovers, swimmers, windsurfers and kite surfers to the hilly lake district in the heart of Jutland with its Himmelbjerget and on to city life in Århus, the second largest city in Denmark.

Grenaa Marina and Ferry Port

Grenaa port and the town are bound together in a natural way by Grenaaen, the stream of Grenaa, which all over can be followed by a system of paths.

Close to the centre of the town, the plantation and the moor open up for a recreation area which totals 400 hectares.

The pedestrian streets of the town centre have a lot of speciality shops and shopping centres and the urban environment is rich with beautiful historical buildings from various periods. Many resources have been used in order to create an interesting and coherent urban environment. This has resulted in many prizes and distinctions, such as the prize for town planning, which was awarded to the town for the extensive refining of public spaces and squares.

The Fishing Museum (Dansk Fiskerimuseum) shows the different fishing tools and tells the story of the industry. There is a large model ship collection of different fishing vessel types and a special collection of engines.

Djurslands Museum is situated in a former merchant`s house from 1750. The exhibition shows finds from the prehistory of the region. Among others coins from the Kirial and Balle hoards. The recent collections include textile production and toys.

The Kattegat Centre is a fascinating Shark Centre. Visitors can get right up close to the exciting world under the sea. In the shark tunnel below the shark tank there are a variety of tropical sharks, rays, and exotic fish.

The statue of Soeren Kanne was set up because on the 15th February he defied a storm and the sea as he heard a skipper`s cry for help from a grounded ship. As the lifeboat could not sail him to the wreck he took his father's horses and had them swim out to the wreck. He succeeded in saving the skipper and one sailor and got a life- saving medal of King Frederik VI.

Grenaa Plantage is an area that consists of differents kinds of forest and large areas with heather. In spite of being close to beaches and towns these areas are very peacefull.
