Transportation to and from the Port of Reykjavik

Book Port of Reykjavic tickets here!

Reykjavik is connected to The Faroe Islands, Hamburg, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Helsinborg, Gothenburg and Frederikstad by ferry, while transport around the island is facilitated by a coastal highway, and limited inland routes. A train service is not available, but there is an efficient bus service operating on the island.

If you are driving on the island, you will find that streets in towns are generally sealed and have excellent surfaces, however, outside towns, the roads are often gravelled, so drivers must exercise caution.

A 1351km (840-mile) ring road (called Highway One) circuits the entire island, so the two main routes to the city are along this road to the east and to the west.

Around the city, a bus servive is provided by Reykjavik Bus Service (SVR), Borgartun 35. The two main bus stations in Reykjavik are found at Hlemmur and Laekjartorg. Buses operate every 20-30 minutes (06:45-24:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00-24:00 Sunday), while at the weekends night buses are available also (02:30-04:00).

The main coach station is situated at Vatnsmyrarvegur 10, near Reykjavik City Airport. It is operated by BSÍ Travel which is a consortium of the bus lines, and provides an extensive bus service to most parts of the country, as well as a large number of organised bus tours.

All taxis in Reykjavik charge standard rates and are metered. Most taxi stations also offer day tours to the main attractions around the city.

Keflavik International Airport is located 40 km west of Reykjavik. Kevlavik deals with international flights while Reykjavik City Airport connects the city with regional destinations including the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Reykjavik City Airport is connected to the city centre by bus no. 5.

The Faroe Islands, Hamburg, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Helsinborg, Gothenburg and Frederikstad are all connected to the island by ferry, twice-monthly. This is primarily a cargo vessel, with a limited number of places available for passengers.

Parking at the port is quite limited, however you will find a number of spaces for both short and long term stays.
