Danish ferry operator DFDS Seaways offers several routes from Newcastle. Its ships depart from the International Ferry Terminal, Royal Quays, North Shields, located 8 miles east of the city centre. The Newcastle-Amsterdam (Ijmuiden) route departs daily, with a journey time of 16 hours. Ships depart Newcastle at 17:30 and arrive in Amsterdam the following morning at 9:30. The Newcastle-Kritiansand-Gothenburg, in Sweden, route takes 26 ½ hours and departs twice a week.

Fjord Line's primary route is the sailing from Newcastle in England to Bergen in Norway, with journey time of 26 hours and 45 minutes (Fjord Line purchased this route from Color Line). En route, the ferry calls at the Norwegian ports of Stavanger and Haugesund. The ferry docks at Stavanger after 20 hours and takes 22 ½ hours to travel to Haugesund. Sailings drop from three a week in the summer months (Friday, Sunday and Wednesday), to two crossings per week during the winter (Saturday and Wednesday). This route is serviced by the M/S Jupiter. Passengers with cars should arrive no later than 1 hour and during the peak summer months, no later than 2 hours prior to sailing time at the terminal.
