Danish ferry operator DFDS Seaways offers several routes from Newcastle. Its ships depart from the International Ferry Terminal, Royal Quays, North Shields, located 8 miles east of the city centre. The Newcastle-Amsterdam (Ijmuiden) route departs daily, with a journey time of 16 hours. Ships depart Newcastle at 17:30 and arrive in Amsterdam the following morning at 9:30. The Newcastle-Kritiansand-Gothenburg, in Sweden, route takes 26 ½ hours and departs twice a week.

En route, the ferry calls at the Norwegian ports of Stavanger and Haugesund. The ferry docks at Stavanger after 20 hours and takes 22 ½ hours to travel to Haugesund. Sailings drop from three a week in the summer months (Friday, Sunday and Wednesday), to two crossings per week during the winter (Saturday and Wednesday). This route is serviced by the M/S Jupiter. Passengers with cars should arrive no later than 1 hour and during the peak summer months, no later than 2 hours prior to sailing time at the terminal.
