More About The Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese, or Dodecanisos, is the name of the island complex in the north eastern Aegean. They are situated between the islands of Crete, the Cyclades, lkarias, Samos and the Asia Minor seaboard.

Rhodes is the largest island and capital of the Dodecanese islands complex and is famous as the island of sun, sea and sand, the ideal place for vacations. It is the third largest Greek island and, officially, the sunniest place in the Europe.

Rhodes is among the finest, not only in Greece but in the whole of the Mediterranean. It is situated at the island’s most northerly point and ringed by sea on the east and west. Rhodes (Rodos in Greek) combines the cosmopolitan character of a contemporary city with the picturesque of the medieval town, which gives the impression of having been untouched by the passage of time.

Booking a ferry to, in, or from the Dodecanese couldn't be easier. You can either use the booking form at the top left of the page. Or, if you see a price you like on the left, just select the number of passengers and click go.

Dodecanese Islands Ferry Harbour

Agathonisi
Agathonisi is the north most islet of the Dodecanese island complex with a quite impressive coastal configuration and many beautiful windless bays.

Astipalea (Astypalia)
Astypalea, called Ichthyoessa (Island of the Fish) by the ancients for its rich fisheries, resembles two islands linked by a natural bridge.

Halki (Chalki)
Halki looks like a part of Rhodes minus the great current of tourism. A mountainous island, it is ideal for those who wish for peaceful holidays.

Kalimnos (Kalymnos)
This island of barren rock, golden beaches and tiny green valleys owes its fame to its celebrated sponge fishers.

Karpathos
This oblong island, third largest in the Dodecanese, possesses incomparable natural beauties and traditions jealously guarded by its inhabitants.

Kassos
This is the southern end of the Dodecanese, as if it were to meet Crete by sailing out in the Carpathian Sea.

Kastelorizo (Megisti)
This small but heroic island to the east end of the Aegean, outer link of the wondrous Dodecanese chain, used to be called since Antiquity, Megisti (=maxima).

Kos

This island has given the world Hippocrates, father of medicine; it looks like a huge floating garden. The city is built along a wide bay and catches the eye from the very first moment.

Leros
A generally mountainous island with deep bays often full of greenery picturesque valleys and dented coasts.

Lipsi
This is a small charming island with magnificent beaches and picturesque tavernas serving fresh fish and local wine.

Nisyros
As we approach Nisyros by boat we cannot fail to be deeply impressed by the image that emerges before our eyes: perfectly white houses, dense greenery, and the colors of the volcanic soil.

Patmos
Called Jerusalem of the Aegean, Patmos is the island of ascetic austerity. It is made of rock and bays and surrounded by seagull-islands.

Simi (Symi)
This is mainly a rocky island, except for its southern part which is covered with pines, mulberries and fruit-bearing trees.

Tilos
This is an island with marvellous sandy beaches, full of springs and streams and Genoan towers. Tourists are still few.

Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese are a group of Greek Islands in the south east Aegean.

The name Dodecanese means 12 islands but in fact there are more of 163 islands, most of them really tiny of which only 26 are inhabited.

Situated at the most eastern part of Greece, at the borders of Europe. You will find here a wonderful blend of architectural styles of eastern and western cultures. Almost every island has its Classical remains, its Crusaders’ Castle, and its traditional villages.

Some of these Greek Islands are located at the border to Turkey. They have everything to offer to the visitors: whitewashed houses, beautiful beaches with crystal waters, charming villages, exciting nightlife.

The total population of the prefecture of Dodecanese reaches 190,071 inhabitants and has an area of 2579.275 square kilometres. There are ferry ports in many of the Dodecanese islands like in Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Karpathos and Kasos.

From May 2012 Dodecanissos Seaways will schedule, the newly acquired small ferry, Panagia Skiadeni, on the route from Rhodes to Marmaris, Turkey. Initially, the ship that can transport 115 cars and up to 700 passengers, will cover this route once a week but there are plans to extend the service.
